First woman president of students union- Richa Singh from Allahabad University

University of Allahabad is a public central university located in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is  informally known as Allahabad University. It was  Established on 23rd September 1887, and it is the fourth oldest University in India. Every year Thousands of Students got Admissions in this Prestigious University.


Students union elections held in August 2015 in the Allahabad University. As per official Sources and Media reports, Richa Singh, student of MA Economics won the presidential post. She became second woman to be elected as the AU students’ union president, since Independence. Before her, Kumari S K Nehru held the post in the year 1927.

In the 128-years history of the Allahabad University, a female has been elected as the president of the Allahabad University students union. Richa Singh was elected as the president on 14th September 2015. The presidential polling took place in very tight security as a volatile situation had emerged in the aftermath of nominations of more than a dozen candidates.

List of other other elected office-bearers in the AU students Union are as Follows:

  • The runner-up candidates was Rajneesh Singh, an independent candidate supported by the Pratiyogi Chhatra Sangharsh Samiti.
  • Rajneesh Singh taken up the cause of agitation against Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission.
  • The third Postition in the AU election 2015 is Bagged by Sarvam Dwivedi.
  • Vikrant Singh as vice-president, Siddharth Singh elected as general secretary.
  • Sarvan Jaiswal became deputy secretary & Jitendra Shukla cultural secretary.

The election voting took place between 10 am and 2 pm and the counting started same day evening 6.30 pm.

Richa Singh, a research scholar, belongs to Aligarh and founded a ‘Friends Club’ a few years which was independent of students’ wings of established political parties. The five main faculties in AU are of Arts, Commerce, Law, Medicine, and Sciences.

Students participation in the Allahabad University Election:

  • About 36 per cent of students (7,352) came forward to cast their votes out of 20,555 students.
  • Only 19.76 per cent woman ( 1,286 out of 6,509) exercised their franchise for voting.
  • The pro-left AISA and SFI and the NSUI did not made any solid impact in AU 2015 election in UP state.
  • But, it was the best ever performance shown by the right-wing students wing of this University of Allahabad.
