IGNOU Celebrates 30th Foundation Day- Indira Gandhi National Open University

Indira Gandhi National Open University is a distance learning national university in India. In hindi it is इंदिरा गाँधी राष्ट्रीय मुक्त विश्वविद्यालय and is also known as “IGNOU- the people’s university”.  Its headquarters situated at IGNOU road, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi. Recently, IGNOU celebrated its 30th foundation day last week. Indira Gandhi National Open University is India Central government’s only open university. IGNOU was established in 1985.

On the occasion of IGNOU foundation Day, it announced the start of its latest initiative, The Innovation Club or IC. The IC is basically an incubation centre for ideas to help provide education to people who would do not have easy access to it. The foundation day celebrations were conducted across all regional centres in the country.

IGNOU is run by the central government of India. IGNOU felicitated dignitaries and various invitees shared their views on ‘Higher education and changing scenario. At the Nagpur regional centre, senior academicians gathered to share ideas on how we can ensure accessibility of education to all and how it can transform the individual.

IGNOU is the largest university in the world with over 4 million students. Haribhau Kedar, former vice chancellor of Nagpur University, said, “Higher education should bring transformation in the society. It should bring change in one’s thinking as well. Our system enriched itself by absorbing those values. Later, demarcation and division started. People have started expecting that the government has to do everything without any contribution”.

IGNOU work processes in five zones, viz, north, south, east, west and north east. Mr. Kedar said, “The purpose of higher education is to provoke a person to think for change in oneself. Higher education should also inculcate the Indian value of Vasudhaika Kutumbakam that means every individual should think he or she is related to every other individual and every part of the nature”.

IGNOU started its operation in 40 countries abroad. P Sivaswaroop, regional director of IGNOU said, in his welcome address that IGNOU is continuing the ideals laid in its foundation principles. “The university is striving to build a knowledge society through inclusive education. Nagpur Regional Centre is focusing more on reaching the backward sections of the society. It is organizing awareness meetings at the village level and at the residential areas of deprived sections of the society.”
